History of Rwanda

The Hutu arrived in Rwanda between the 5th and 11th centuries, having first arrived with the Twa. Later, in the 14 century, the Tutsi arrived in the nation. The 19th century marked a significant era of military conquest and administrative consolidation under Mwami Rwabugiri. The ethnic groups were brought under one rule, resulting in the formation of the Kingdom of Rwanda.

Rwanda was a part of German East Africa from 1894 to 1918, when it came under Belgian authority in line with the League of Nations mandate. Rwanda and Burundi were one block; Ruanda-Urundi, under the Belgians until 1st July 1962 when Rwanda got independence. The Belgians ceded power and established a Hutu-dominated government under President Grégoire Kayibanda.
Juvénal Habyarimana, another Hutu, led a coup in 1973, ascending to power and ruling for 20 years. The Hutu’s political grip created ethnic tension, culminating in the 1990 invasion by the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). In 1994, Habyarimana was assassinated ultimately sparking the disastrous genocide.

The genocide resulted in over 800,000 deaths and a massive refugee crisis in the neighboring DRC.
