Ghana

The Gateway to Africa and Land of Warm Smiles

Found on West Africa’s coast, Ghana is a land of diversity, history, arts, and mouthwatering cuisine. But it’s the locals who often leave a mark on many of the country’s visitors. Ghanaians are some of the friendliest lot you’ll ever come across on the continent. No matter where you go, you will be met with the occasional Akwaaba (which means welcome in Twi).
Add all this to its explosive wildlife and beautiful beaches, you have a travel destination raring to go. Ghana’s capital, Accra, is a bustling city where the rhythm of life matches the beat of traditional drums echoing through its streets. Here’s more detailed information about Ghana;

History of Ghana

Ghana’s history stretches back to the Bronze Age, around 2000 BC when early societies engaged in fishing along the coast. The Portuguese were the earliest European settlers on Ghana’s coast (Gold Coast), arriving in 1471. They were drawn to the area’s abundant gold reserves, establishing forts such as Elmina Castle to secure trading positions.

Over time, Dutch, British, Danish, and Swedish traders joined the pursuit for economic dominance, resulting in a network of forts and castles that dotted the coastline. The 17th century witnessed a shift from gold trading to the brutal slave trade.
The fortified coast became a hub for slave export, with local African rulers such as kings in Akan states getting heavily involved. By 1807, British efforts to abolish the transatlantic slave trade had gained momentum, leading to significant shifts in the Gold Coast’s economic landscape.

Towards the end of the 19th Century, only the Dutch and British remained on the Gold Coast. But in 1874, the Gold Coast became a British protectorate, following the exit of the Dutch. The next 56 years under the British led to the consolidation of the three areas (Gold Coast, Asante, and Northern Territories) that made up present-day Ghana.

The road to independence only took shape in 1946 when Africans were granted majority seats on the Legislative Council. In 1949, the Convention People’s Party was created by a radical politician, Kwame Nkrumah. Under his leadership, Ghana gained independence in 1957.

Capital of Ghana

The capital of Ghana is Accra. The city pulsates with a rhythm all its own. From the chaotic energy of its vibrant markets like Makola to the serene shores of Labadi Beach, Accra embodies a unique blend of tradition and modernity.

Its skyline, dotted with both colonial-era architecture and contemporary skyscrapers, tells the story of a city in constant evolution. Here, the spirit of entrepreneurship thrives alongside a deep cultural heritage, where street vendors offer everything from traditional kente cloth to the latest in global fashion trends.
