History of Egypt
People settled in Egypt as early as 6000 B.C., forming small villages that gradually united into states. During the Old Kingdom (2575 B.C. to 2150 B.C.), pharaohs amassed power and wealth, leading to the construction of the pyramids. The pharaohs in this age claimed association with the sun god Ra.
Around 3100 B.C., a pharaoh unified these kingdoms, asserting control by claiming divine oversight from the falcon god Horus. The New Kingdom (1540 B.C. to 1075 B.C.) marked Egypt’s zenith, featuring rulers like Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Ramses II.

In 332 B.C., Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, which was then ruled by Greek pharaohs until Cleopatra VII’s defeat by Octavian, a Roman conqueror. Egypt came under the Roman rule for the next 600 years. The Ottomans conquered Egypt in 1517, and it remained under their control, except for a brief French occupation, until 1805.
In 1882, Egypt was subsequently ruled by the British. After World War I, the Kingdom of Egypt was established, gaining independence from Britain in 1922. However, Egypt didn’t become a republic until 1953 when Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew King Farouk.
